Kay Hansell

Kay was born and raised in the Finger Lakes region of central New York State. Art was her favorite subject all through school and at summer camps, but Kay was not able to pursue studio art as a high school or college student due to other academic demands. She has a BA degree in art history from Dickinson College, an MEd in elementary education from Goucher College, and an associate’s degree in architectural drafting and interior design from a local community college.

Family life, active volunteering, and work consumed all of Kay’s time for many years. When retirement arrived it was time to do what she had always said she wanted to do in her “old age,” that is, paint with watercolors. Having worked with watercolors for several years, she has added acrylics to her painting mediums. She has a love for both mediums and finds certain subject matters lend themselves to one or the other. Her love of gardening and nature is reflected in her many works of flowers, birds, animals, and plants. Attention to detail is one of the strengths reflected in her paintings. Kay has a gallery wall at Crossroads Art Center where you can view her work first hand.  She has had work in shows both in the Richmond area and in the mid-coast area of Maine.

Kay lives in Manakin Sabot with her husband and one cat.  She has two married sons and three grandsons.
